台灣媒體消息，台灣女將許淑淨8月7日摘走奧運女子舉重53公斤級金牌，這是台灣在本次奧運中的首枚金牌。許淑淨擊敗中國選手，摘走金牌。許淑淨也應是上屆奧運的金牌得主。許淑淨的教練蔡溫義在賽後驕傲的說，台灣雖小，五臟俱全，人口不多，但是有「Made in Taiwan」的金牌。許淑淨曾在2012年倫敦奧運會上獲得女子53公斤級銀牌。後因獲得金牌的哈薩克選手趙常玲被驗出禁藥，許淑淨應該是金牌得主，被遞補金牌，現在只差正式公告。
